Royal Academy of Music, and afterwards in Paris. Pupil of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Was the first holder of the Sir John Goss Scholarship.
Visited America, 1887, wdiere his motet-t Doniine Deus, which, with English v'ords, has become a standard w'ork of modem Church music, was the principal wrork performed at the 250th anniversary of Harvard University. In 1889 w?as selected by Sir Arthur Sullivan to conduct Ivanhoe at the Royal English Opera House. He vTas subsequently engaged to write the ballets for the Empire.
