Son of Gregorio Canales Salinas, businessman, and Julia Santos nephew of Fernando Canales Santos, member of the Board of Industria Monterrey; cousin of Fernando Canales Clariond, federal deputy and National Action Party candidate for governor of Nuevo León, 1985; aunt, Maria del Consuelo Clariond, is the sister of Eugenio Clariond Garza, president of Industrias Monterrey.
