( While everyone agrees that the oceans are the most imp...)
While everyone agrees that the oceans are the most important part of the earth's life support system, and that their environmental management is necessary if serious problems are to be prevented — little action is taken (or enforced) because too few believe that effective ocean environmental management can be profitable as well as responsible. Written by a leading authority in the field, this book provides a complete non-technical survey of the problems of ocean pollution and the promise of effective ocean management. Discusses — in an unbiased manner — all important aspects of ocean environmental management: the important functions of the oceans; the environmental impacts of ocean pollution in physical, biological, and economic terms; the man-made and natural sources of pollution; methods for the prevention of pollution; effective management of ocean use and ocean resources; containment and clean up of pollution; and planning of the long-term effective management of ocean use in an environmentally safe manner. For anyone concerned with the maintenance of the world's oceans as a resource, including general readers and students curious about environmental developments in the oceans.

(Focuses on the evaluation of seaport planning and develop...)
Focuses on the evaluation of seaport planning and development-- criteria, requirements and technology. Analyzes capacity needs in light of new technology and feasibility of future development, and examines the impact of new concepts on the ocean transport industry. Emphasizes the development of a methodology to forecast commodity flow shipping activity, and suggests practical model design for the analysis of different port uses and for optimizing port investment and operational decisions. Covers a range of other topics, including land/water interfaces, intermodal transportation, labor, port master planning, cost/benefit studies, physical developments of ports, and the increasing role of international, multi-national and governmental financing as they affect policy and future development.

( This work examines the relationships among engineering ...)
This work examines the relationships among engineering leadership, technological change, and economic development. Specifically, it reviews the role and contribution of engineers--through their education and work--in the pursuit of excellence and effectiveness in our increasingly pervasive technological development. The relationship between the rate of technological development, technological diffusion, and success in its application, and the role or position of engineers in industry and government is interdependent. Frankel concludes that while the United States continues its dominance in basic scientific research and technology development, the growing lag in developing and applying technology in a timely and effective manner is largely a result of the lack of engineers in senior decisionmaking positions in industry and government. This work will be of interest to practicing engineers, practicing managers, and scholars and students of economics and technology development.
