Errol Thomas Elliott was born on November 10, 1894, in Carthage, Missouri, United States. He was the son of Elisha M. Elliott and Alice S. (Elleman) Elliott.
Elliott graduated from Friends University with a bachelor's degree in 1927, he also became a Doctor of Letters there. He also attended Iliff School of Theology in 1929. Elliott received his master's degree in 1930 from the University of Colorado.
Elliott received honorary doctorates in 1952 from Friends University, and in 1965 from Earlham College.
Elliott began his career as a spiritual life secretary in 1930 for the Five Years Meeting of Friends. From 1936 to 1942 he served as a pastor of the Quakers Meeting in Indianapolis. He became a president of William Penn College (now William Penn University) in 1942, serving for two years. From 1944 to 1957 he served with the Five Years Meeting of Friends, and edited the magazine American Friend. Elliott returned to Indianapolis as a pastor in 1957, retiring in 1965.
During his career, Elliott wrote nine books, including Quakers on the American Frontier (1969, his first book); Quaker Profiles from the American West (1972); the autobiography Life Unfolding (1975); the poetry volume Sing the Faith (1976); R. Ernest Lamb, Irish American Quaker (1977); The Deepening Stream: Poems of the Spirit II (1982); the autobiography Memory: A Life Review of Ninety-two Years (1986); Openings for Life and Thought (1988); and his final book, Random Writing on Life Questions (1988).

1975Elliott married Ruby M. Kelly on December 25, 1916. The couple produced four children - Errol Thomas, Harriet Alice Elliott Combs, Paul Winston and Robert Kelly.
