Professor Ishmael Parsai is currently a retired professor of Radiation Oncology who worked as the Chief Medical Physicist in the Radiation Oncology Department at the University of Toledo Health Sciences Campus (UT-HSC) and served as the director of the graduate medical physics program at the University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio. In this program, both MS and Ph.D. degrees in radiation oncology physics and in diagnostic medical imaging physics are offered. Dr. Parsai is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Toledo, an adjunct professor at Wenzhou University, P.R. of China, and an adjunct professor of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Findlay, Ohio.
Dr. Parsai has been a practicing medical physicist for over 30 years, board certified by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) in 1995, and the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in 2006, and again in 2016 in Radiation Oncology Physics and Therapeutic Radiologic Physics respectively. Dr. Parsai is a full member of numerous scientific organizations including the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), American Society for Therapeutic Radiology & Oncology (ASTRO), American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD), among others. He has authored eight issued patents with three of them licensed to manufacturers for production and has five additional Provisional patents in progress. Dr. Parsai has authored a textbook entitled “A Practical Guide to Inversely Optimized Treatment Planning”, has published 78 peer reviewed full length articles and conference proceedings in preferred journals, 8 book chapters, 183 abstracts, 68 paper and poster presentations presented in national or international meetings, and a number of scientific and professional articles published in numerous non-proffered journals. He and his co-authors received in 2022, the ASTRO’s Annual Meeting Abstract Award consisting of $1000 honorarium, a certificate of recognition along with a complimentary registration to the Annual Meeting, the Award of Excellence for the Best Radiation Measurement Article in 2016, and the ASTRO’s First Place Award for Poster in 2010.
A recipient of Dean’s Graduate Mentor Award at the University of Toledo Health Sciences Campus in 2008, and Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research in 2014, Dr. Parsai continues to remain active in his groundbreaking research and has served as the major advisor to 11 Ph.D. students and 54 Master level students graduated in the past 15 years. During the same time period, he also served as the committee member for 55 MS and Ph.D. students at the University of Toledo.
Dr. Parsai has also served as the editor of the Medical Physics World, the official bulletin of the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP) from 2000 - 2009. This bulletin has a circulation of over 21400 members and is distributed in some 90 adhering countries and over 15 non-member countries around the world. He also served as the chairman of the ACRO Physics Commission from 2001 – 2010 with direct involvement in the college’s accreditation program. Dr. Parsai is the winner of the 2004 Simon Kramer Medal from the American College of Radiation Oncology for dedicated and outstanding service to the college and received his fellowship from the ACRO in 2007. He is the first non-physician in the history of ACRO to receive this honor. He also received the American Association of Physicists in Medicine fellowship in 2010, and the International Organization of Medical Physics fellowship in 2015.
Dr. Parsai serves or has served on many committees or sub-committees of professional organizations. He served as the president of the Society of Directors of Medical Physics (SDAMPP) starting in January 2018 followed by serving as the SDAMPP’s chair of the board in 2019, serves the American Board of Radiology (ABR) as an oral board examiner since 2006, served as a member of Board of Directors (AAPM) in 2014-2017, Regional Organizational Committee (AAPM), Newsletter Editorial Board (AAPM, 2012 - 2018), Publication Committee (IOMP), Evaluation of the Emerging Technologies Committee (ASTRO), International Scientific Exchange Program (AAPM), Exchange International Scientists Program (AAPM), Professional task force TG-103 (AAPM), and the International Affairs Committee of the AAPM among others.
