(The first publication of this book was in Twayne’s World ...)
The first publication of this book was in Twayne’s World Author Series in 1977 (G.K. Hall, in Boston). By that time Ayala, who was born in 1906, had established an impressive oeuvre to which he continued to add material. All his longer novels belong to this pre-1977 period. So, essentially this volume analyzes the core of his literary pursuits as well as other interests, and constitutes a comprehensive study of all his works until 1977. Ayala continued to cultivate the varied genres even after 1977, but did not return to long novels. He had the rare gift of being a master of theory and criticism as well as a brilliant writer of fiction. In the summer of 2009 my husband and I visited Ayala and his wife Carol Richmond in Madrid. Soon after he passed away at the age of 103. As my professor of graduate courses at Rutgers, he encouraged us to compare new works we read with the best, with those of Cervantes, Galdós, Unamuno. and other great writers of all times. So in writing this and other studies of his works, these are the standards that guided me. Francisco Ayala was a master of expression, a powerful narrator, a wise theorist, a perceptive critic, an erudite scholar, a longtime friend, and an inspiring teacher.

(The same hand that writes can in some artists also paint,...)
The same hand that writes can in some artists also paint, so what is it that leads so many talented individuals in Spain to do both? Some are as well known as Pablo Picasso, Federico García Lorca, and Juan Ramón Jiménez. We examine production in both disciplines and discover surprising ways of achieving similar results in poetry and painting. Included are the following: Regoyos, Ricardo Baroja, Alberti, Lorca, Juan Ramón, Fernández Mazas, Buero Vallejo, Granell, Delibes, Ramón y Cajal, Unamuno, Max Aub, Seoane, José Moreno Villa, Tomás Barros, Castelao, Isaac Díaz Pardo.

(Each of the five chapters of this well-researched book gi...)
Each of the five chapters of this well-researched book gives a new forgotten or unknown aspect of Columbus, like for instance his diary, the apparent result of two different authors, Christopher as a poet mixing Spanish, Catalan and Italian. The findings published in this book explain that although he wrote in Castilian it was clearly not his first language and his origins can be pinpointed to the Aragon region because of the grammar and the way he constructed sentences. "He didn't express him correctly in any written language," says Estelle Irizarry. "His Spanish was notoriously incorrect yet at the same time efficient, poetic and eloquent." There is also evidence to suggest that Columbus, who first crossed the Atlantic in 1492, may have adopted his surname later in life to disguise his true origins and another theory claims that he once worked for a pirate called Columbus, and that he adopted that name in order not to embarrass his relations with his new profession.

(A comprehensive study of the ten major novels written by ...)
A comprehensive study of the ten major novels written by Puerto Rico's foremost 20th-century novelist before 1982. His novels follow the changes that took place from the agrarian sugar economy,to the coffee plantation and ultimately, city life, and the effects of emigration on the Puerto Rican psche. His first novel, La llamarada became in instant classic, but Laguerre's art reflects changes in language, style, and recognizes the value of imagination, legends, and myth as the "leavening" of history.
