Allen, Ethan was born on May 12, 1832 in Monmouth Company, New Jersey, United States. Son of Samuel Fleming and Phœby (Goble) Allen.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Brown U., 1860, A.M., 1870. Bachelor of Laws, valedictorian, U. City of New York, 1861. Recruited a brigade for Civil War, but did not enter service because ordered by Secretary of War to remain in civil service.

Career

Deputy United State Attorneys, Southern District, New York, 1861-1869, appointed by President Lincoln chairman National Committee of Liberal Representatives to make Horace Greeley president. President Cuban League United States, 1870-1872, 1896-1898. Retired, 1890. Author: Washington, or the Revolution (history American Revolution in dramatic form, blank verse.
