Brees was born on August 10, 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama, United States; the son of Eugene and Bette (Johnston) Brees.
Brees received a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in 1972. Four years later he earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas.
Brees began his career as a trial lawyer at Thompson & Knight in Dallas in 1976. Ten years later he took the same position at Thompson & Knight in Austin. Since 2002 he has been an attorney at Whitehurst, Harkness, Brees, Cheng, Alsaffar, Higginbotham, and Jacob, PLLC. Also since then, Brees has focused on representing injured persons and their families in cases involving serious personal injury or wrongful death. He continues to practice in both state and federal courts and represents plaintiffs in medical malpractice and birth injury cases against doctors, nurses and hospitals and in cases involving the United States government under the Federal Tort Claims Act.
Also he served as national counsel for a major manufacturer in fluorochemical litigation and Texas counsel for other manufacturers. Brees has tried over 75 cases to verdict in both state and federal courts, the vast majority of which have resulted in favorable verdicts for his clients.
Eugene has been admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas, the United States District Courts, Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas and the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit.
Brees is a member of the Capital Area Trial Lawyers Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, American Association for Justice, American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
On August 5, 1973 Eugene Brees married Mina Ruth (Akins) Brees, with whom he divorced on May 1987. Then on April 23, 1988 he married Amy Hightower. They have three children.
He is an American football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League.
