Served Second lieutenant, First lieutenant and captain corps of engrs., 1875-1889. Resigned October 5, 1889. Colonel 1st United States colonel engrs., May 24, 1898.

Brigadier general vols., January 21, 1899. In regular army, served on various surveys until 1883. Was assistant professor civil and military engineering and the art of war, West Point, 1883-1885.

A.-d.-c. staff of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, 1885-1886. Chief engineer division Atlantic and department of the East, 1885-1886. Assistant engineer, commissioner District of Columbia, 1886-1888.

In volunteer service, organized 1st regiment United States vols., engrs., serving with it in Puerto Rico., 1898-1899. General manager railway department, and 2d vice president Thomson-Houston Elec. Company, 1888-1891; 1st vice president General Elec.

Company, since 1892; president Thomson-Houston International Elec. Company, since 1893; director British-Thomson-Houston Company and of the Cie. Français pour l’Exploitation des Procedes Thomson-Houston, Paris, since 1893.
