Member of Parliament (1974-1977). Member of the Academy of Athens (1980-1982). Held an honorary doctorate in Law from the University of St Andrews (1965).
Although a thinker with varied interests in ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of history and the history of philosophy, Papanoutsos’s most important work was in epistemology. Here he advocated a form of rationalism which he described as ‘critical philosophy’, aiming at a synthesis of traditional dualisms and a transcendence of dogmatism and relativism.
