In the 1900s, member of the intelligentsia in Moscow, interested in religion and philosophy (with Belyi, Florenskii, Bulgakov, and Shestov). In the 1910s, wrote in Russian liberal newspapers. During the revolutionary years, prominent member of the left SR circle Skify (with IvanovRazumnik), 1917-1918.
Emigrated to Berlin, 1920, receiving references from I. Hessen, the well-known Cadet editor. Founded in Berlin the publishing house Skify, 1920 (probably with secret Soviet funds). In the mid- 1920s returned to the USSR, and became an establishment writer, publishing works on Lenin.
During the years of terror, arrested, 1938, but released after only 3 months. Remained a trusted Soviet official writer until his death.
