Educated at the Nikolaevskii Cadet Corps, 1884, and at the Cavalry School, 1886. Graduated from the Nikolaevskoe Military Academy in 1892.
Served in the Life Guard Hussars. Military attache in Belgium, Holland and Italy, 1898— 1907. Head of the Nikolaevskoe Cavalry School, 1910-1912.
Chief-ofstaff of the Moscow military district in 1912. Lieutenant-general, took part in World War I. During the February Revolution 1917, wounded by revolutionary soldiers. Representative of the Russian High Command with the Italian Army, autumn 1917.
Invited by the local anti-Bolshevik government of Arkhangelsk under Nikolai Chaikovskii, the veteran revolutionary, to command the local forces allied to the British Expeditionary Corps (sent to guard British war supplies delivered to Russia). Appointed head of the Northern front forces by Admiral Kolchak in 1919. After the British left Arkhangelsk, tried to continue the fight against the Reds alone.
Defeated, he evacuated the rest of his forces in February 1920. In France, appointed by General Wrangel as his chief-of-staff. Later became the deputy of General Kutepov in the leadership of the White Civil War Veterans (ROVS).
Head of ROVS after Kutepov’s kidnapping in Paris by Soviet agents in 1930. Disappeared himself the same way 7 years later in Paris, 22 September 1937. Presumably killed by his kidnappers soon thereafter.
