Ewaga Tarozaemon was born in 1801.
He studied Dutch and was well versed in the arts of calculation, surveying and military drill. Also skilled in painting and calligraphy.
Much concerned about coastal defense, he accompanied Yozo Torn, Magistrate of Edo City, m his inspection tour of izu Peninsula, Sagami and Shimo-osa Provinces by order of the Shogunate (1839). Because he disagreed with Yozo concerning the means of coastal defense, he was disliked by the latter and secluded himself at Nirayaraa. In 1841, he learned gunnery from Shuhan Takashima and cast guns at Nirayama. The furnace he caused to be built foi' the purpose still remains today. Began teaching gunnery (1842) and initiated into it such distinguished men as Zozan Sakuma and Takayoshi Kido. Having obtained Shogunate permission to cast guns, he executed orders from clan lords. Also built forts at Shinagawa, Edo.
