Excerpt from The Character and Blessedness of Those Who Die in the Lord: A Sermon, Delivered at Acton, Dec, 14, 1812, at the Funeral of Mrs. Abigail Adams, Wife of the Rev. Moses Adams, of That Town Religious fear accompanies such an operative faith. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. By this fear is meant a reverential awe of the infinite God, of his perfections and character a holy fear of offending him, and a pious carefulness to honour all his name. This fear is not terrifying and slavish, but filial and affectionate. Love, the1 efore, is os sential, God must have the supreme affection of the heart, agreeably to the first and great command, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, the. Love is the greatest and the most im portant of all the christian graces, without which we are nothing in religion, whatever may be our pre tensions. To such faith, fear, and love, as briefly described, the favour of God is inseparably connect ed. Persons possessing such a character are recon ciled to God, are renewed and sanctified, and, on the plan of the gospel, are objects of the divine favour and complacency. Nothing can separate them from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord; and when they leave this world, they die in the Lord, they fall asleep in Jesus Christ, in a sure and certain hope of a glorious resurrection and blessed immortality. Excerpt from Half Century Discourse: Delivered November 16, 1828 at Concord, Massachusetts When I cast my eyes over the assembly that stat edly worships here, I see, not only many new faces, but a new face to the whole. Here and there only is a countenance which I beheld fifty years ago. Full well do I remember the white locks that adorned the long seats which here stretched before me. Now the heads that are white and grey were then on the shoulders of children. This house too is changed. I have not forgotten its former figure and inconvenience. There were two galleries flat and deep, and a high ceiling, which rendered speaking in it very difficult. But it has, long since, undergone a general repair, and been rendered handsome and convenient and easy for the speaker. Ezra Ripley, a native of Woodstock, Connecticut, was the fifth of the nineteen children of Noah and Lydia (Kent) Ripley and a descendant of William Ripley who settled in Hingham, Massachussets, in 1638. The family moved to Barre, Massachussets, in 1762, and Ezra's boyhood was spent in hard farm labor.
At sixteen he began to prepare for Harvard College, where he graduated in 1776. He spent a year in the study of theology with the Rev. Jason Haven at Dedham.
After teaching for a time at Plymouth, he was ordained and installed pastor of the First Church in Concord, Massachussets, on November 7, 1778.
He took up his abode in the Old Manse. His pastorate continued for sixty-three years and he was the only minister in the town of Concord for about half a century. He declared that he had never accepted the Calvinistic and Trinitarian doctrines in whose atmosphere he was reared, and that on reaching manhood he had definitely rejected them, finding himself in line with the rising tide of Unitarianism in eastern Massachusetts.
He adhered to the doctrines of grace, however, and always remained a fervent evangelical. He held his people with a strong hand and was greatly revered and respected by the entire community. His rare pastoral instincts enabled him to be a counselor and friend to all ages and classes.
His activities continued till near the end of his life, and he preached his last sermon on the day after his ninetieth birthday.
He was a leader in all social and civic activities, was always a member of the school committee, and in 1784 drew up the constitution of the Concord Library. He was deeply interested in the Revolutionary history of the town and when the Battle Monument was erected in 1836, gave the land on which it stands and the avenue leading to it.
His History of the Fight at Concord (1827) is of considerable interest and value. His publications were chiefly sermons, however, one of which, his Half Century Discourse Delivered November 16, 1828, contains much that is of historical and biographical interest.
Ripley wrote a pamphlet on that subject, entitled a History of the Fight at Concord, in which he proved that, though the British had fired first in Lexington, the Americans fired first in his own town (Concord, 1827). He also published several sermons and addresses, and a Half-Century Discourse (1828).

He was an early advocate of peace and a pioneer in the cause of temperance, signing the total abstinence pledge against the advice of his physician and organizing what was perhaps the first temperance society in the country.
Ripley had a strong will and was born to govern, but he was always courteous, exceedingly charitable, and much given to hospitality. He was a picturesque figure, invariably wearing till the end of his days the costume of his early manhood. He was below the medium height, but so great was his dignity that his shortness was hardly noticeable. His portrait still hangs in the First Parish Meeting House at Concord.
He married Mrs. Phebe (Bliss) Emerson, the widow of his predecessor, the Rev. William Emerson, and became the father of two sons and one daughter and the step-grandfather of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
