I ts importance is due to the numbers of species and the abundance of individuals in the insect group. In both these respects insects form by far the greater portion of our land fauna. Various estimates place the number of species of insects at from one to ten millions and the number of individuals is far beyond calculation. Of these species nearly a half million have been named and described. The range of insects is almost universal on land, but only a few forms are marine in habitat. Intensively speaking, their range is equally great. In any given locality insects may be found inhabiting every conceivable situation and living on the greatest variety of foods. When we consider the vast numbers of insect forms and their wide distribution and range in food habits it seems inevitable that many of these forms should clash with man, and this is indeed the case. Many of the earths products which are most useful and highly desirable to man are attractive to insects as well. Man, in his assumed character of the dominant animal, claims prior right and such insects as affect his welfare or comfort are listed as pests. Less account is taken by man of his insect allies, those forms which minister directly to his needs, or those which, in a roundabout way, add to his pleasure or his revenues. He was born on September 25, 1878 in Clio, Michigan, United States, the eldest of the three sons of John Phillip Sanderson, a Congregational minister, and Alice Gertrude (Wright) Sanderson. His father, a descendant of Thomas Sanderson, who had come from England to Pennsylvania before the American Revolution, was a native of Philadelphia; his mother, of Springfield, Ohio. Dwight, as he was known, grew up in a series of Michigan towns where his father held pastorates.
After attending public schools in Detroit and Lansing, he entered the Michigan Agricultural College, from which he graduated, B. S. , in 1897. He then enrolled at Cornell University, where he studied entomology and in 1898 received a second B. S. degree.
He took a correspondence course in sociology from the University of Chicago. In 1916, at the age of thirty-eight, he formally enrolled there as a graduate student in sociology; he received the Ph. D. in 1921.
For two decades Sanderson worked in the field of economic entomology. He served successively as assistant state entomologist of Maryland (1898); entomologist at the Delaware Agricultural Experiment Station and professor of zoology at Delaware College (1898 - 1902); state entomologist of Texas and professor of entomology at the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College (1902 - 04); state entomologist of New Hampshire and professor of zoology at New Hampshire College (1904 - 10).
Beginning in 1907, he was also director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station. From 1910 to 1915 Sanderson served as dean of the college of agriculture of West Virginia University and, from 1912, as director of its Agricultural Experiment Station.
Recognized as an authority in his field, Sanderson in 1910 was elected president of the American Association of Economic Entomologists. In his work as an administrator, particularly in West Virginia, Sanderson served the entire agricultural population of the state and came to feel an increasing concern with the broader economic and social problems of the farmer.
While at Chicago he met Albert R. Mann, who upon being appointed dean of the college of agriculture at Cornell University invited Sanderson to become head of Cornell's department of rural social organization (later renamed the department of rural sociology). Sanderson accepted the position in 1918 and remained until his retirement in 1943.
He helped state school administrators locate new schools in the center of developing communities so that they could serve as integrating forces.
His Leadership for Rural Life (1940) provided systematic guidance for community leaders. In 1933-34 he headed the rural research unit of the Division of Research and Statistics of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, where he supervised a survey of rural families on relief.
Just two days after his sixty-sixth birthday, he died in Ithaca of arteriosclerosis. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery, Ithaca.
He published four books (The Rural Community: A Natural History of a Sociological Group (1932), Leadership for Rural Life (1940) and others) and fifty articles on various aspects of entomology, and especially on methods for the control of insect pests. He also took part in a movement to standardize and ensure proper labeling of insecticides which culminated in the passage of the Federal Insecticide Act (1910). He was the head of Cornell's department of rural social organization, further promoted community use of the school plant, advocated the establishment of vocational training programs and health services in local schools, and, at Cornell, took part in developing an active university extension service. Sanderson was one of the founders (1919) of the American Country Life Association and its president in 1938, was elected president of the American Sociological Society. Sanderson was also active in his own community, as a board member of several Ithaca charities and, for many years, as director of the Social Services League, which operated two settlement houses.

At Cornell, drawing upon his knowledge of entomological taxonomy, he developed techniques for classifying and describing the spatial organization of rural society. He was especially interested in neighborhood and community units, which he termed locality groups.
Sanderson rejected the idea that shared locality alone constituted a neighborhood, and proposed as the two necessary criteria a sense of "neighborliness" and the ability of residents to function as a group. In delineating various types of locality groups, he employed five descriptive categories of inquiry: identity; composition; intergroup relationships; intragroup relationships; structure and mechanism. Although his interests focused almost entirely upon communities, he later applied this method of analysis to the rural family, developing an outline for observing, analyzing, and classifying different types of families in a systematic way.
Sanderson worked consistently to translate his sociological findings into programs to advance the welfare of rural people.
Although somewhat lacking in humor, Dwight Sanderson maintained a warm and friendly working relationship with his students and colleagues.
On Sept. 19, 1899, he married Anna Cecilia Blandford, a schoolteacher from Brandywine, Md. ; they had a daughter, Alice Cecilia.
