Malavasi was born on July 25, 1948, in San Benedetto Po, Lombardy, Italy; the son of Antenore and Dina (Bardini) Malavasi.
Malavasi received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical School at the University of Ferrara in 1973.
Malavasi began his career as a medical assistant at St. Anna Hospital in 1974. Three years later he took a position of an assistant professor and associate professor in 1982 at the University of Torino Medical School. Since 2000 Fabio has been a professor at the same school.
Also he held multiple positions at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Basel Institute for Immunology, Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Beth Israel Hospital in New York. Malavasi is the world’s expert in CD38 biology and an expert of immunology. He works as a director of Laboratory of Immunogenetics at the University of Torino Medical School.
Malavasi is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Human Genetics and Society of Nuclear Medicine.
On February 27, 1977 Fabio Malavasi married Alessandra C. Collevati.
