Federico Errázuriz Echaurren was born in Santiago on 16 November 1850. He was a son of a former president of Chile, Federico Errázuriz Zañartu.
He received his law degree from the University of Chile in 1873.
In 1876 he entered the Chamber of Deputies, where he remained until his election as senator.
Under President Domingo Santa María González, Errázuriz was one of the leaders of the congressional opposition. Subsequently, although minister of war and navy in the cabinet of President José Manuel Balmaceda Fernández for a short time, he sided with Congress against the president in the civil war of 1891.
In 1894 Errázuriz was elected to the Senate. In that same year President Jorge Montt Alvarez named him minister of justice and public instruction.
In 1896 Errázuriz was elected president as the nominee of the Coalition, made up of some factions of the Liberals, the Conservative Party, and the National Party. His margin of victory was so narrow, however, that the issue had to be decided by Congress.
In 1900 Errázuriz’ health seriously declined. On May 1, 1901, he retired as chief executive, turning over power to Vice President Anibal Zañartu, and died before the inauguration of his elected successor.
