Trained by N. Legat. From 1905, dancer, then soloist at the Mariinskii Theatre. With the Bolshoi Theatre,
1909-1910. Took part in a US tour,

From 1918, combined his dancing career with choreography. From 1922-1945, with some intervals, artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre. Artistic director of the Leningrad Choreographic School,
1936-1941.
Revived some classical ballets. Founded a department at the Leningrad Choreographic School, 1937, and headed it until 1941. From 1962, headed the choreographic department of the Leningrad Conservatory.
Professor, 1965. Immensely respected figure in Soviet ballet. Trained and influenced a generation of ballet dancers.
