Graduated from the Military Academy.
From an aristocratic Russian family. As a young officer, became attracted to the revolution. Advanced rapidly in the Red Army.
Chief-ofstaff of the Baltic military district, 1941. Severely wounded and captured by the Germans in the summer of 1941. Declared his opposition to Stalin and made contact with the NTS (Narodno-Trudovoi Soiuz), an anti-communist group in the Wiistrau camp.
Joined General Vlasov. Attempted to turn the Dabendorf School, where he was transferred, into an ideological centre for the Russian liberation movement, as well as a centre for selecting and training capable officers. Vlasov’s deputy, he was appointed Chief-of-staff of the KONR (Committee of the Liberation of the Peoples of Russia) armed forces, 1944.
Made contact with the Americans on 5 May 1945, and received an ultimatum to surrender within 36 hours with his entire 2nd Division. Stopped in Przibram by Czech communist partisans, who took him into a building to a ‘friendly reception’. Inside, handed over to SMERSH. Brought to the Lubianka prison in Moscow, tried in secret, and hanged with Vlasov and others on 2 August 1946.

The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
