In 1813 Fedor Ivanovich Baldauf entered the Mountain Cadet Corps in Saint Petersburg. Then, in 1823, having completed the course and received the rank of shift master, he returned to Transbaikal.
In 1823 Fedor Ivanovich Baldauf started to work as a teacher of a mining school in the Nerchinsk factory. In 1824 he received income support from the Free Society of Lovers of Literature, Science, and the Arts (used to attend their meetings in 1818). After the Decembrist revolt, he was sent to work in Shilkin, because he was suspected of being connected with revolt members.
