Ferdinand Schureman Schenck was an American clergyman of the Reformed Church. He also represented New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives.
Background
Ferdinand Schureman was born on August 6, 1845 at Plattekill, Ulster County, New York, United States, the son of the Reverend Martin Luther Schenck and Abigail Van der Veer. His grandfather, Ferdinand S. Schenck, was a distinguished physician of Somerset County, New Jersey.
Education
Ferdinand was graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1865, and then entered the Albany Law School. He received the degree of LL. B. in 1867. In 1872 he graduated by the classis of Paramus from New Brunswick Theological Seminary.
Career
After studies Schenck practised law for two years, and then, convinced of a call to the ministry, gave up the law. After his graduation from New Brunswick Theological Seminary and ordination, he served successively four Reformed churches, all in the state of New York - in Clarkstown, 1872-77, Montgomery, 1877-90, Hudson, 1890-97, and University Heights, New York City, 1897-99.
In 1899 he was appointed by the General Synod of the denomination professor of practical theology in the New Brunswick Seminary. In this office he served for twenty-five years, becoming emeritus professor in 1924. His department of instruction included homiletics, liturgics, pastoral practice, and, in a comprehensive way, sociology, to which he gave enthusiastic attention when it first became an academic subject.
Other fields of thought and instruction were also familiar to him and he was lecturer on the literary study of the Bible at New York University (1898 - 1900), acting professor of philosophy (1904 - 05), and acting professor of ethics (1907 - 08) at Rutgers College, and acting professor of homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary (1909 - 10).
He wrote much and was the author of books on various subjects. Among them are The Ten Commandments in the Nineteenth Century (1889); The Bible Reader's Guide (1896) and others.
He died at White Plains, New York.
Achievements
Ferdinand Schureman Schenck was a professor of practical theology in the New Brunswick Seminary for twenty-five years. Besides, he was the president of the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America. His famous works: The Bible Reader's Guide (1896); The Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer (1902); Modern Practical Theology (1903); The Sociology of the Bible (1909).
Schenck's intellectual interests were wide and varied, as his services of instruction suggest; even science was not outside their range, astronomy being one of his favorite studies.
Personality
His excellence as a preacher lay in the clearness and directness of his thought, the simplicity and aptness of his language, and in his somewhat informal yet dignified and fluent address. He had a warmth of sympathy and a graciousness of personal contact that made him helpful and beloved as a pastor and left a lasting impression upon his students.
Connections
On August 26, 1874, Schenck married Ellie S. Haring of Nyack, New York, by whom he had three daughters and two sons.
