Emigrated to New Zealand, 1863. Returned to Scotland, 1872. Became a stockbroker, and was chairman of the Edinburgh Stock Exchange, 18S5.

Established himself on the London Stock Exchange, 1887.

Contested Kennington Division of Lambeth, 1892. Member of Parliament for Saint Rollox Division of Glasgow", 1895- 1900. Stockbroker.
