He studied architecture but became known as the leading name in Portuguese abstract painting.

Career

Lanhas was born and died in Porto. He started painting in 1944, influenced by music, astronomy, and the international abstract movement. Since then, he"s been one of the most innovative and original Portuguese painters.

  Fernando Lanhas was one of the most innovative and original Portuguese painters, who became known as the leading name in Portuguese abstract painting.
  
  His artworks 02-44 and O Violino are considered to be a historical landmark in Portuguese painting. They were shown for the first time in 1945 at the 2nd Independent Exhibition in Lisbon, which today is part of the CAM (Modern Art Centre) collection.
