Originally a philosopher of science, Northrop probed the epistemological foundations of science and undertook spectulatively to extend his discoveries cosmically and culturally. The Meeting of East and West (1946) established his fame as an interpreter of the differences between cultures and a seeker of conflict resolutions by humanistic and scientific methods. He devoted the final decades of his career to the philosophy of law, with special focus on international law.
