About 1890 began practice with the firm of Ferguson, Calrow & Wreni. After remaining with that organization until 1917, he withdrew to become a partner with the late John K. Peebles, and between 1917 and 1930 assisted in designing the following buildings in Norfolk: Ghent Methodist Church (1922); First Presbyterian Church (1922); Church of the Sacred Heart; Olaf Shelom Synagogue; Hotel Lorraine (Ferguson & Calrow).
Mr. Ferguson and his partners also were architects of the Grace Covenant (Presbyterian) Church at Richmond (1923); the Phi-Beta-Kappa Memorial Hall at Williamsburg; and the State Museum of Fine Arts at Richmond, and in a later period served on the Advisory Committee of Architects for the restoration of historic buildings at Williamsburg.
