(In this challenging and original interpretation of Irish ...)
In this challenging and original interpretation of Irish subject matter in painting from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, the focus is on the interaction of art and politics. Well know artists such as James Barry, David Wilkie and Jack Yeats feature, but more in the context of how they referred to Ireland in their work than in terms of overall assessment of their works.

(Although the study of art history in Ireland has long bee...)
Although the study of art history in Ireland has long been established, research in the field of Irish art history has been hampered by the difficulty in obtaining key source material on the critical reception of art. This book aims to provide an anthology of sources and documents relating to the history and development of the visual arts in Ireland form the eighteenth century to the present day. The anthology covers the period from the establishment of the Dublin Society Drawing Schools in 1746 to the opening of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1991. Judicious extracts and full texts that inform on attitudes and reactions to both the production of art and its uses in Ireland are included. Public exhibition reviews, comments from private letters and journals as well as polemical and theoretical essays illustrate what was being said and thought about artistic development in Ireland over the past two centuries. A significant achievement of the anthology is that it clearly illustrates the practical and theoretical parallels with both literary and other artistic traditions, which the visual tradition in Ireland enjoys. The publication of these texts in a single volume enables the reader to create useful historical comparisons as well as facilitating the careful examination of historical documents. These features should have particular appeal to students of art history and cultural studies.

He and Roy Foster co-created Conquering England: Ireland in Victorian England, which was exhibited from 9 March 2005 to 19 June 2005 in London. The name comes from G. B. Shaw"s mordant observation that "England had conquered Ireland, so there was nothing for it but to come over and conquer England."
lieutenant featured portraits of Shaw, Oscar Wilde, West. B. Yeats and Charles Stewart Parnell. "Conquering England also included painters, sculptors, politicians, journalists, theatrical entrepreneurs (including Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula).. he reign of Queen Victoria was characterized by a contentious and contradictory relationship between Ireland and Britain.
Irish were prominent in other spheres, notably medicine and the law, but the worlds of the visual arts, politics, literature and the stage retain the most vivid impression of Irish influence in Queen Victoria"s reign.. the end of the period.. the Celtic craze and events such as the new Abbey Theatre"s visits to London.. coincided with the return of the cultural focus to Dublin, to an Ireland undergoing political radicalization and cultural renaissance.".
