The place and date of her birth are unknown.
Fiona wrote her first book, To Catch the Sun, in 1990, it was published as Painted Birds. In the work, the author traces the evolution of Ursula Fraser from pampered child of wealthy English parents in Malaysia to orphaned refugee from invading Japanese armies, to the postwar period in England, where she is grudgingly accepted into the home of an aunt, and then goes to work as a governess. The novel was well received by critics. A reviewer for Books praised Bullen’s “good descriptive writing and character portrayal.” And although Joan Hinkemeyer, writing in Library Journal, noted that the author relies heavily on cliches of the family saga genre, To Catch the Sun also exhibits “lively dialog, vivid descriptions, and diverse, colorful characters.”
The Deep Blue Sea, Bullen’s second novel, set in Brazil, received mixed reviews, in this work, Bullen centers on the ill-fated romance struck up between two first cousins in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s. Andrea Lee Shuey commended some aspects of The Deep Blue Sea in her review in Library Journal, stating: “John and Eleanor (main characters) are well drawn, and the action keeps the atmosphere tense and the pages turning.”
In 1995 Fiona published A Worthy Man, it was followed by, From Pillar to Post, in 1997.
