Steaua
On 16 May 2010, Matei made Liga I debut for Steaua in a 2–0 victory against Universitatea Craiova. He came on in the 82nd minute to replace Romeo Surdu. Cesena
After 8 months without a team, Matei signed with Cesena on 11 September 2011.
He was released a year later.
Volyn Lutsk
Matei signed a three-year contract with Volyn Lutsk in mid-2013. In three seasons with the club he scored 10 league goals in 54 appearances.
Rijeka
On 2 February 2016, Rijeka announced that they have signed Matei on a 3 1⁄2-year contract. Matei scored his first goal for Rijeka in the first leg of the 2015-2016 Croatian Football Cup semi-final against Slaven Belupo on 15 March 2016.
