Francesca Vinciguerra (Frances Winwar)

biographer , novelist , translator

Francesca Vinciguerra is best known for her series of romanticized biographies of 19th Century English writers. In the 1930s and 1940s, she was an outspoken opponent of Italian Fascism.

Education

She attended local public schools.

She studied at Colleges but never took a degree. Quickly mastering English and French and retaining complete fluency in Italian, she showed an early taste for literature.

Career

She changed her name to Winwar, a literal translation of Vinciguerra, because her Italian name was too long to fit on the book's spine. She was a frequent translator of classic Italian works into English and published several romantic novels set during historical events.
