Franco Santi, photographer, was born in 1945 in Udine (Italy). He took his first picture at the age of 10, using a folding Voigtlander camera a gift from his mother, which may have previously belonged to some uncle.
A few years later he was able to use more accurate exposure times thanks to his newly aquired ICE exposimeter-
In 1957, his father gave him a Leica III c camera which, curiosly enough, he later sold to a guy only to rebuy it soon afterwards.
In 1961 a technical breakthrougth was possible with a acqisition of a Canon F1 camera (still in fully working condition today, complete whith a set of different focal-lenght lenses.
In 1976, after graduating(1971) in chemistry at Trieste University,Franco opened a photographic workshop destinated to survive three years, in meantime he was also serving as a consultant to a number of photographically-oriented chemical firms (Ornano...and others).
A turning point in his professional life was marked by his acquaintance in 1980 with the Sweedish sience photographer Lennard Nilsshon and his celebrated book "Life before birth"
Franco Santi has portrayed several famous musicians, notabily piano players, Michele Campanella, Laura De Fusco, Ennio Morricone, Vladimir Horovitz, Nino Gardi and others, for magazines covers and theatre playbills.
He is interest in, and works on, problems realted to science photography, notably medical photography.
He regularly contributes articles and pictures to italian magazines such as "Plein Air"and "Airone".
His interest in photographic printing has increased considerabily wuth time: getting acquainted with Ansel Adams' pictures and printing thecnique has prompted him to pursue increasingly higer technical standards. Since 1994 he's been running a workshop for black-and-withe photographic print, whose reputation is growing quickly and steadily. He collaborates with several hospitals and with the Medicine Dept. of Udine University.
Franco Santi's latest major effort is a work (exposition in Abu Dhabi) on Industrial Arcaeology portraying the old industrial settlements still existant in his native land, Friuli, Italy.
