Anderson was the son of Roger Anderson, of Jesmond, who was Sheriff of Newcastle in 1612, and his wife Anne Jackson, daughter of William Jackson, of Newcastle.

He was sheriff of Newcastle in 1641 and was knighted in November 1641. In the Civil War, he "was a devoted loyalist" and as a result was subsequently fined £1200, sequestered, imprisoned, and stripped of his knighthood. He was re-elected Member of Parliament for Newcastle in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament and sat until his death at the age of 64 in 1679.
He was mayor of Newcastle again in 1662 and 1675.
