Served on United States Coast Survey, 13 years. Resigned; during last 2 or 3 years was engaged in field work and its reduction to determine differences of longitude between observatories at Greenwich, Paris, Cambridge, and Washington. While with Coast Survey, devoted leisure to experimental physics, and in 1878 invented Blake Transmitter, which has played an important part in the development of telephony throughout the world.
Has since patented many other electrical devices. Director Bell Telephone Company. Fellow A.A.A.S. American! Academy Arts and Sciences.
