(Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Diagnosis It is imposs...)
Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Diagnosis It is impossible to prepare such a Manual without making use of the works of Walshe, Flint, and Sibson, and I have done so freely. The drawings have been prepared by Dr. Stillman, and are original. The idea of superimposed plates is, of course, an old one, but is of much practical value. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from A Handbook of Pathological Anatomy and Histology: With an Introductory Section on Post-Mortem Examinations and the Methods of Preserving and Examining Diseased Tissues In the third edition of this work, the same objects have been kept in view as in the second edition. It is intended that the student and the practitioner shall find in it the information which they need to enable them to perform autopsies, to preserve the tissues, to prepare them properly, and to examine them with the microscope. The work, therefore, comprises instruction in the methods of making post-mortem examinations, of preserving diseased tissues, of preparing them for microscopical examination, and of cultivating and examining bacteria. It also gives an account of the lesions of the different parts Of the body, of the general diseases, of violent deaths, and of poisoning; Of the changes produced by inflammation and degeneration; and of the structure of tumors. (Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Post-Mortem Examinations and ...)
Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Post-Mortem Examinations and of Morbid Anatomy This work is intended to serve as a guide for those persons who may be called upon to perform post-mortem examinations. For most physicians this call is only an occasional one, so that they may feel the need of some hand-book to which they may refer. It is not proposed to offer a complete treatise on Pathological Anatomy, nor on Medical Jurisprudence, but rather a work which bears the same relation to them that a dissecting manual does to a complete Anatomy. The book is divided into four parts. The first gives the method of performing autopsies on the bodies of adults and of young children. The second gives in detail the lesions which have been observed in each organ of the body. The third gives the lesions which are found after deaths from general diseases, from violence, and from poisons. The fourth gives a short classification of tumors. Francis Delafield was born on August 3, 1841 in New York City, New York, United States. He was the son of Edward Delafield and his wife, Julia Floyd.
After receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Yale in 1860 he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons' in New York and there received his medical degree in 1863.
On graduation Delafield went immediately to Europe where he continued his medical work in London, Berlin, and Paris, taking full advantage of the opportunities then being offered for detailed postmortem study.
The influence of Rudolf Virchow was at that time beginning to be felt strongly in medical science, and Delafield became an ardent follower.
He returned to America firmly convinced that pathological anatomy was the sine qua non of scientific medicine, and he accordingly passed the greater part of his time during the next thirty years in the post-mortem room making detailed studies of pathological tissues, meticulously correlating his findings with clinical features observed before death.
In 1866 he became curator at Bellevue Hospital, in 1871 pathologist at the Roosevelt Hospital, and in 1875 visiting physician in the Bellevue Hospital. In the following year he was made adjunct professor of pathology and the practise of medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, and in 1882 was made full professor in the place of Alonzo Clark.
In 1886, in company with William Osier, James Tyson, James Graham, and William Pepper, he founded and became president of the Association of American Physicians, which was to have a profound influence upon the development of medicine. The first meeting of this organization was picturesquely referred to by Osier as “the coming-of-age party of internal medicine in America”. Delafield was a remarkably effective teacher. It is said that his lectures were particularly attractive because of his simple, forceful delivery and the fact that the information which they contained was based wholly on first-hand experience.
In accordance with a decision made early in life, he retired from professional and hospital duties at the age of sixty, though he was then at the height of his physical and mental vigor.
He continued in practise as a consultant until shortly before his death, which resulted from apoplexy, at Noroton, near Stamford, Conn.
His scientific papers number nearly a hundred, and his influence and teachings were widely felt through an unusually successful textbook, A Handbook of Post Mortem Examinations and of Morbid Anatomy, first published in 1872, and revised and enlarged, in collaboration with T. Mitchell Prudden, in 1885.
The twelfth edition appeared in 1922. In 1878 Delafield issued with Charles F. Stillman a Manual of Physical Diagnosis.
His fame as a pathologist was greatly enhanced through the publication of his Studies in Pathological Anatomy, an elaborately illustrated pathological atlas which appeared in parts between 1878 and 1891. He also contributed chapters to many medical and surgical treatises, such as his “Pytemia and Allied Conditions” in The International Encyclopedia of Surgery (1881) and his “Diseases of the Kidneys” in Twentieth Century Practice (1893).

By nature Delafield was somewhat austere and little given to amusements or levity, but to his students he was stimulating and always sympathetic.
On January 17, 1870 Delafield married Katherine Van Rensselaer of New York.
