Appointed captain 19th United States infantry, May 14, 1861. Severely wounded at Shiloh: colonel 25th Maine infantry, September, 1862. Colonel 30th Maine veterinary infantry, 1864.

Brigadier general, May 1864. And major general vols., November 1865. Brevetted major general United States of America, 1865.

Lost a leg at Monetts Bluff. Louisiana, 1864; afterward served until November 1, 1866. Retired with rank of brigadier general United States of America Was mayor of Portland, 1876.
