Gago, who stands 1.72 m (5 ft 8 in) tall, competed in 1992 as Mission Bolívar in her country"s national beauty pageant, Mission Venezuela, obtaining the title of Prior to traveling to South Africa for, she participated in 1992, held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, on November 8, where she became Venezuela"s first ever titleholder. As the official representative of her country to the pageant held in Sun City, South Africa on December 12, 1992, she became Mission World Americas and 2nd runner-up to eventual winner Julia Kourotchkina of Russia.
