Francis Gruber was born on March 15, 1912 in Nancy, France. The son of the stained glass artist Jacques Gruber and Suzanne Elisa Gruber. He also had a brother Jean-Jacques Gruber.

Gruber first exhibited at the age of 18. He preferred to paint human figures that were highly sculpted. Among his works were "L'annonce de l'hiver", "Mia" and "Job". During his career, Gruber was influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dürer and the Lorraine engraver Jacques Callot.
He died on December 1, 1948 in Paris, France.
