Private tutor; London University Schools. Roman Seminary. Primarily intended for the legal profession, he was induced by his friend, Cardinal Manning, to enter the Roman Catholic.
Priesthood; ordained priest, 1894. Earnestly desirous of promoting temperance, thrift and industry, and the betterment of the social and moral condition of the poor and outcast, he founded the World’s Catholic Temperance Crusade, of which he is still the first President, 1896. Vice-President of the United Kingdom Alliance.
Established a new Roman Catholic Mission at West Bridgford, Nottingham, 1897. Missionaryrector of Market Rasen, Lincoln, 1900. Has travelled throughout Europe, and has made extensive tours around the world preaching “ Crusades ” on behalf of promoting temperance throughout England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, etc.
This work, strictly non-political and unsectarian, drew more than 328,500 persons of all creeds and classes to become his disciples and join his “Temperance Crusade.” Pope Leo XIII. conferred upon him the title of “The Apostle of Temperance,” 1900. Whilst Pope Pius X. bestowed upon him his highest commendation and apostolic benediction, 1903.
