Francis D. Imbuga was born on February 2, 1947, in Maragoli, Kenya. He is a son of Samwel Govoga and Doresi Aireni.
Francis Imbuga attended Keveye Primary school and Chavakali Intermediate School. In 1963 he entered Alliance High School. Imbuga studied at the University of Nairobi where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree in 1975. In 1992, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Iowa.
Francis Imbuga started his career as an actor at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation in 1970. He left this post in 1973 and in 1976 he became a lecturer in the Department of Educational Communication and Technology at the University of Nairobi. Two years later, he moved to Kenyatta University, where he became a senior lecturer and head of the Literature Department. In 1992, Imbuga was appointed dean of the Faculty of Arts and held this post until 1996.
Francis Imbuga started to write plays in 1969. His play Omolo was chosen as an entry in the Kenya National School’s Drama Festival finals. Later he wrote several plays, including Kisses of Fate and The Fourth Trial, both published in 1972, The Married Bachelor and Game of Silence. In 1979, Imbuga wrote his play The Successor, which was inspired by an incident in Kenya during 1975. In 1984, Imbuga released Man of Kafira, the sequel to Betrayal in the City. He also wrote a book Shrine of Tears that was published in 1993.
