Education
Markham holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cambridge. Founded in the early thirteenth century, Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in England and is organised around self-governing colleges that share teaching with central university faculties. At Cambridge, the Master of Arts is conferred on graduates after a set number of years rather than through further examination.
In 1965 Markham was admitted to the bar in England, the professional qualification of barristers in England and Wales, who are called to practise by the Inns of Court. This admission, recorded in 1965, is the earliest documented legal qualification in his career.
Career
Markham's documented professional career is in English law. After admission to the bar in England in 1965, Markham became a partner of Rowe & Maw, a London law firm whose office was at 20 Black Friars Lane in the Blackfriars district of London.
Rowe & Maw was founded in London in 1895 and grew into a firm with offices in Manchester and Brussels. Its London practice later became part of a larger transatlantic partnership: in 2002 it combined with the Chicago firm Mayer, Brown & Platt to form Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, which kept the Rowe & Maw name for several years before dropping it.
The English bar, whose barristers are called to practise by the Inns of Court, forms one of the two main branches of the English legal profession alongside solicitors. Markham's admission to it in 1965 is the earliest documented stage of his legal career.
