Francis John McComas was born in Fingal a small town in a valley of the same name in north east Tasmania.

When still a teenager he worked his passage to America where he studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art and later in Paris. On his return he was based in San Francisco. McComas"s watercolours were chosen in 1913 to be in the International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York after he had moved to Carmel.
McComas died in Pebble Beach.
