Background
Sir Francis Mundy, also known as Francis Mundy of Markeaton, was the elder of two sons and the heir of Francis Noel Clarke Mundy of Markeaton who was a magistrate and poet in Markeaton, near Derby.

In 1825 Mundy constructed new streets and properties on the site of King"s Mead Priory on the west side of Derby. Whilst this work was being undertaken a coffin was discovered containing the bones of a small woman. The priory had been a home for nuns.
The damaged stone coffin was not preserved.
Mundy married Sarah Newton on 1800 and had a son, William Mundy of Markeaton in 1801. His direct descendants today have the surname Markeaton-Mundy.
They include Simon Godfrey Markeaton-Mundy, Duke of Markeaton, Charles Robert Markeaton-Mundy, Count of Mondaye and Chancellor of Foreign Affairs of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Street.John of Jerusalem, Ecumenical Knights of Malta, Ivan Joseph Markeaton-Mundy, Charis Maria Markeaton-Mundy, Sandra Markeaton-Mundy, Countess of Checkendon.

In 1820 Mundy was appointed High Sheriff of Derbyshire and then became a member of parliament for Derbyshire from 1822 to 1831.
