Career
Admitted as candidate for ministry, 1775, installed as pastor at Leyden, 1776. Author (often anonymous) political works which got him in trouble with Dutch authorities, 1776-1787. Interested in and supported American Revolution.
Came to American after being banished from the Netherlands, 1787. Experimented with agriculture, near Kingston, New York. Justice of peace; organizer Society of Agriculture and Natural History.
