Studied at Oxford Military College, Cowley. 619 Joined Bechuanaland Border Police, 1892. On annexation of the then Crown Colony to the Cape Colony, was appointed a sub-inspector in the C.
Member of Parliament. Served during Bechuanaland Campaign, 1896-1897 (medal and clasp). Anglo-Boer Campaign, 1899-1902 (King’s medal, 2 clasps, Queen s medal, 2 clasps, despatches twice).
In command of Cape Colonial Forces, 1907, operating in conjunction with Imperial German troops against Morenga (Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, 2nd Class of Royal Crown of Prussia, with swords). German South-West African War (medal and clasp). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1907; Major in Cape Colonial Forces, and District Inspector in Cape Mounted Police.
