Instructor in physical training, Cornell Univercity, 1916. Second in command Lieutenant, United States Army, 1917, and advanced through the grades to brigadier general. Served through World War I.

With 2d Infantry Division, 1919-1920. Instructor Infantry School, 1921-1923. With 27th Infantry, Hawaii, 1923-1928.

Assistant professor military science and tactics Louisiana State University, 1928-1934. With 16th infantry, Governor’s Island, New York, 1937-1938, 31st Infantry, Philippines, and as force commander, 1938-1941. United States Military observer and liaison for War Department, Singapore, Java and Burma, on General Wavell’s staff, 1941-1942.

In first Java Campaign, 1942. In Hawaii, Aleutians, Alaska, China and Burma operations, 1942-1944. Chief of operations division Southeast Asia Command, 1944-1945, 1945 to end of war, G-3 Tactical Headquarters.

United States Army Forces, China, 1945-1946. China liaison officer to AFPAC, Manila and Tokyo. Duty with USAFC, Shanghai and Japan.

Chief joint advisory staff, A.A.G., Nanking, China, 1946-1949. Commanding general O.M.D. 2d Army 1949-1950. Chief M.A.A.G. Mission, Saigon, Indo China since 1950.
