Studied at Blackheath School.
Entered the Bengal Civil Service after open competition, 1868. Arrived in India, 1870. Served on special duty in the Behar and Madras famines, 1874and 1877.
Superintendent, Central Jail, Salem, 1877. Received the thanks of Government for constructing a system of embankments in the Nadiya District, 1876. For famine services, 1881.
For excavating a great drainage canal at Rangpur, 1890. For energy and devoted etforts to save life during a very serious cholera epidemic, 1891. For constructing water-works at Arrah, 1894.
Collector of Customs, Calcutta, 1895. Commissioner of the Chittagong Division, 1896. Retired from the Indian Civil Service 1897.
Travelled in Central Asia, the near East, Rumania, Russia, and Finland. Member of Council, Cremation Society of England. F.R. Hist. Society; Indian Civil Service, retired.
