(Robert Carey (1560-1639) was created Earl of Monmouth dur...)
Robert Carey (1560-1639) was created Earl of Monmouth during the reign of Charles I. He was the youngest son of Elizabeth I's Lord Chamberlain. He wore fine clothes at court and lived beyond his means; went as a volunteer to the wars in France and Holland, sailed against the Armada; married a wife and won the Queen's displeasure... His style is brisk and easy and his matter exciting; the Memoirs, first printed in 1759, are a historical document of the first importance.
