Graduate Brown, 1830 (Master of Arts). Captain 1st New York volumes in Mexican war. Served in Civil war as colonel 2d California infantry and brevetted brigadier general United States volumes

Career

Counsel for United States in Department of Justice, 1877-1882. Was guest of Lafayette at Louisiana Grange, 1832. Sole survivor of the few who stood by his grave at his burial, 1834.

Assisted De Toqueville in preparation of Louisiana Democratie aux Etats Unis, 1834.

Attached to American Legation, Paris, 1834-1835. Member (Chairman of Commission of whole) State Constitutional Convention, California, 1849.

Lecturer at Boston University Law School, 1873-1874, before Naval War College, Newport, 1896, 1897, 1900.
