Bachelor of Science, United States Military Academy 1923. Honours Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, Oxford (Rhodes Scholar, 1925-1927. 1932), 1932; Huntington Library research fellow, San Marino, California, 1933-1935.

Doctor of Philisophy, Johns Hopkins, 1935. Guggenheim fellow at various libraries, 1942-1943, in England, 1949-1950.

Career

1 d., Elizabeth (Mistress Gerald Scott). Commissioned Second lieutenant, Army of the United States, 1923. and advanced to First lieutenant, 1927, served in Corps of Engineers, 1923-1929. Instructor in English, Stanford, 1935-1938, assistant professor, 1938-1944, associate professor, 1944-1949, professor since 1949.

Visiting professor University of California, 1939, Claremont College, 1948.
