Preached in Sumter County, South Carolina., Greenboro and Washington, Georgia. Became agent American Bible Society. Preached in Eatonton and Bath, Georgia, 1843-1851.
Moved to Kingston, Georgia, 1853, set up school for boys and began research on instincts of birds and beasts. Served unofficially as chaplain in Confederate Army during Civil War. Taught school for girls after Civil War, Macon, Georgia Author: Robert and Harold (later entitled The Young Marooners on the Florida Coast), 1852 (went through 10 editions).
