With 2 others purchased Charleston (South Carolina.) News, 1867, merged with Courier in 1873 to become News and Courier, edited paper, 1867-1889. Took moderate political position, supported Chamberlain (radical governor of South Carolina.) against Wade Hampton in 1876. Advocated encouragement of immigration from Europe, industrialization and diversification of agriculture.
